As underground mining operations push deeper and equipment becomes more power-intensive, selecting the right 5kV portable power cable is no longer just a technical choice—it is a safety, productivity, and compliance decision.
So, what exactly is Feichun Type SHD-PCG Three-Conductor Round Portable Power Cable 5kV, and why is it increasingly specified for longwall shearers in demanding mining environments such as those found in South Africa?
What Is Feichun Type SHD-PCG 5kV Portable Power Cable Designed For?
Feichun Type SHD-PCG is a heavy-duty, medium-voltage (5kV) portable mining cable specifically engineered for longwall shearers and other high-power underground mining equipment that require:
Three shielded power conductors
Three unshielded control conductors
A centrally located grounding conductor
High mechanical strength and excellent electrical shielding
Its round construction and reinforced jacket allow it to withstand continuous movement, dragging, torsion, and abrasion in harsh underground conditions.
Which International Standards Does SHD-PCG 5kV Cable Comply With?
Compliance with globally recognised standards ensures performance consistency and regulatory acceptance across mining jurisdictions.
Feichun Type SHD-PCG meets or exceeds the following standards:
ICEA S-75-381 / NEMA WC 58 – Portable power cables for mining
ASTM B172 – Tinned copper conductors
ASTM B33 – Annealed soft copper wire
CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 96 – Portable power cables
These standards are widely referenced by South African mining engineers, especially in operations aligned with international OEM requirements.
Where Is SHD-PCG 5kV Cable Commonly Used in South Africa?
Typical Applications
Longwall shearers
High-power underground coal equipment
Mobile mining machinery requiring control signalling
Harsh, high-abrasion underground environments
South African Case Study
In a Mpumalanga coal mine, SHD-PCG 5kV cables were deployed on longwall shearers operating at depths exceeding 300 m. Compared to previous SHD cables, the mine reported:
Reduced downtime due to jacket damage
Improved signal stability for machine control
Longer service life under continuous mechanical stress
What Installation Best Practices Should Be Followed?
Maintain minimum bending radius during routing
Avoid sharp edges and unsupported spans
Use approved cable clamps for round mining cables
Inspect jacket condition regularly in high-traffic zones
Ensure proper grounding continuity before energisation
Correct installation significantly extends cable service life and improves safety.
