When powering excavators, crushers, and heavy mobile mining equipment, ordinary industrial cables are simply not enough. Harsh mechanical stress, vibration, moisture, and electrical loading demand a purpose-designed mining power cable.

One of the most proven solutions in this category is the Feichun BS 6708 Type 7S 640/1100V EPR Insulated Heavy-Duty Mining Cable, engineered specifically for excavating and crushing applications operating under demanding site conditions.

What Does the BS 6708 Type 7S Standard Mean for Mining Cables?

BS 6708 is a British Standard developed for flexible mining and quarrying cables used on mobile and semi-mobile equipment.

Type 7S is a screened heavy-duty power cable designed for:

  • High mechanical abuse

  • Stable electrical performance

  • Safe operation of large mining machines

Unlike lighter industrial cables, Type 7S includes screened phase conductors and a dedicated earth conductor, enhancing safety, fault protection, and EMI control.

Key standard highlights:

  • Rated voltage: 640/1100V

  • Designed for excavators, crushers, feeders, and mobile plant

  • Optimized for continuous and intermittent high current loads

How Is the Feichun BS 6708 Type 7S Mining Cable Constructed?

The performance of a mining cable is defined by its internal structure. Feichun’s Type 7S design follows a layer-by-layer engineering philosophy focused on durability and electrical integrity.

What Type of Conductor Is Used and Why Does It Matter?

  • Electrolytic tinned copper

  • IEC 60228 Class 5 flexible stranding

This ensures:

  • Excellent conductivity

  • High flexibility for moving equipment

  • Improved corrosion resistance in damp or chemically aggressive mines

Why Is EPR Insulation Used Instead of PVC?

The phase conductors are insulated with EPR (Ethylene Propylene Rubber), while the ground core remains uninsulated (as per standard).

EPR advantages:

  • Superior thermal resistance

  • High dielectric strength

  • Stable performance under vibration and heat

  • Longer service life compared to PVC

How Does the Screening System Improve Safety?

Each phase core is individually screened using:

  • Tinned copper / nylon braided screen

This design:

  • Improves earth-fault detection

  • Reduces electromagnetic interference

  • Enhances operational safety for large machines

(Pilot cores are intentionally not screened, aligning with BS 6708 design logic.)

Why Is a Chloroprene Outer Sheath Critical in Mining?

The outer sheath is made from heavy-duty chloroprene rubber, offering:

  • Exceptional abrasion resistance

  • Oil and grease resistance

  • Flame retardancy

  • Resistance to ozone, UV, and moisture

This is especially critical for open-pit and underground mines where cables are dragged, crushed, and exposed daily.

Where Is BS 6708 Type 7S Mining Cable Typically Used?

What Types of Equipment Require Type 7S?

  • Hydraulic excavators

  • Mobile crushers and screens

  • Loaders and feeders

  • Fixed-to-mobile mining machinery

  • Quarry crushing plants

It is especially suitable where power stability, grounding safety, and mechanical robustness are critical.

What Are the Best Installation Practices for Type 7S Mining Cables?

How Can Cable Life Be Maximized On-Site?

  • Respect minimum bending radius

  • Avoid sharp edges and pinch points

  • Use rollers during pulling

  • Ensure correct earthing connection

  • Inspect sheath regularly for abrasion

Correct installation can extend cable service life by years in mining environments.

Why Choose Feichun BS 6708 Type 7S Mining Cable?

  • Proven heavy-duty design

  • High electrical and mechanical reliability

  • Multiple size options for different equipment

  • Trusted performance in African mining conditions

  • Cost-effective alternative to frequent cable replacement

If you are specifying power cables for excavators or crushing equipment, choosing the right mining cable directly impacts safety, uptime, and operating cost.
