Mining operations, particularly in South Africa’s gold, platinum, and coal mines, demand power cables that combine robustness, reliability, and safety. One cable that has gained wide recognition is the BS 6708 Type 211 640/1100V armoured mining power cable. Designed for excavating and crushing machinery, this cable delivers exceptional performance in the harshest underground environments.
How Does Tinned Copper Screening Improve Cable Performance?
The tinned copper screen serves multiple purposes:
Electromagnetic Interference Reduction: Protects sensitive electronic equipment from induced currents.
Mechanical Support: Adds a layer of protection over phase conductors.
Corrosion Resistance: Tinning prevents oxidation in humid underground conditions.
This design ensures both operational reliability and long service life in South African mines.
What Are the Advantages of Armoured and Heavy-Duty Sheaths?
Underground mining operations expose cables to:
Mechanical impact from machinery
Abrasion from rock surfaces
Fire risks
Oil, grease, and chemical exposure
The galvanized steel armour of BS 6708 Type 211 resists crushing and impact, while the chloroprene sheath provides resistance to oils, abrasion, and fire. Together, they significantly reduce downtime caused by cable failures.
What Are the Typical Applications of BS 6708 Type 211 in Mining?
BS 6708 Type 211 is primarily used for:
Excavating machines: Such as continuous miners and rock breakers.
Crushing equipment: Including primary crushers, secondary crushers, and mobile jaw crushers.
Coalface lighting: Ensuring reliable power delivery to lighting and auxiliary equipment.
Heavy-duty mobile equipment: Where high flexibility and mechanical strength are required.
In South African mines, it is particularly popular in platinum and gold operations where machinery must withstand abrasive rock and high operational loads.
How Does BS 6708 Type 211 Compare to Other Mining Cables?
Feature | BS 6708 Type 211 | BS 6708 Type 201 | BS 6708 Type 70/71 |
|---|---|---|---|
Rated Voltage | 640/1100V | 640/1100V | 320/550V |

Max Current Rating (A) | 295 | 250 | 135 |
Key takeaway: Type 211 offers higher mechanical protection, heavier-duty outer sheaths, and a broader range of conductor sizes compared to other BS 6708 cables.
How Can Mining Companies Optimize Their Cable Usage?
Select the Correct Size: Avoid undersized cables that overheat or oversized cables that increase costs.
Monitor Mechanical Stress: Regular inspections prevent damage from abrasion, crushing, or bending.
Train Personnel: Ensure staff understand proper handling and termination procedures.
Invest in Quality Cables: BS 6708 Type 211 may have higher upfront costs but reduces downtime and replacement frequency.
Call-to-Action: Mining engineers should consult suppliers for tailored cable solutions, ensuring voltage, current rating, and mechanical properties match their equipment needs.
