What Is Feichun AS/NZS 1802 Type 241SF Mining Cable Used For?
The Feichun AS/NZS 1802 Type 241SF 1.1–11 kV mining cable is a semiconductive screened, extra-flexible underground mining cable designed for demanding applications where mechanical abuse, frequent movement, and high electrical performance are expected.
It is widely used as:
Feeder cables for pumps and substations
Power supply cables for continuous miners
Monorail systems supplying DCBs
Longwall mining equipment
Mobile and semi-mobile underground machinery
The “SF” (Super Flexible) designation indicates that conductor stranding and cable lay-up have been optimized for maximum flexibility, making this cable ideal for harsh underground mining conditions.
Why Does Type 241SF Offer Higher Flexibility Than Standard Type 241?
Unlike conventional medium-voltage mining cables, Type 241SF uses:
Fine-stranded tinned copper conductors
Modified stranding geometry
Optimised lay-up pitch
Elastomeric materials with superior elastic recovery
This design significantly reduces:
Bending stress during reeling and dragging
Internal conductor fatigue
Risk of insulation cracking under repeated movement
As a result, Type 241SF performs exceptionally well in arduous, high-movement mining environments.
How Do Different Type 241SF Voltage Ratings Compare?
Type 241SF Model Comparison (Simplified)
Model | Voltage Rating | Typical Use Case |
|---|---|---|
Type 241.1 SF | 1.1/1.1 kV | Pumps, auxiliary equipment |
Type 241.3 SF | 3.3/3.3 kV | Continuous miners, DCB supply |
Type 241.6 SF | 6.6/6.6 kV | Longwall systems |
Type 241.11 SF | 11/11 kV | Main underground feeders |
Higher voltage versions feature thicker insulation and reduced capacitance, making them suitable for longer transmission distances.
How Does Type 241SF Compare with Standard Type 241 or Type 240?
Feature | Type 241SF | Standard Type 241 | Type 240 |
|---|---|---|---|
Flexibility | ★★★★★ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★☆☆ |
Suitable for mobile equipment | Excellent | Good | Limited |
Mechanical abuse resistance | Heavy duty | Heavy duty | Moderate |
Typical applications | Longwalls, monorails | Feeders | Fixed installations |
Type 241SF is clearly preferred when movement and flexibility are key decision factors.
Where Is AS/NZS Type 241SF Used in South African Mines?
South African Case Study: Platinum Mine Longwall System
In a North West Province platinum mine, Type 241.6 SF (6.6 kV) cables were selected for a new longwall installation because:
Equipment required frequent repositioning
High moisture and abrasive dust were present
Previous standard cables suffered from premature sheath damage
Results after 24 months:
Reduced cable failures
Lower maintenance downtime
Improved safety compliance
This reflects a growing trend in South Africa toward AS/NZS-compliant super-flexible mining cables for high-movement zones.
What Are the Recommended Installation Conditions?
Can Type 241SF Be Installed in Multiple Environments?
Yes. It is suitable for:
Free-air installation
Duct installation
Mobile machinery
Fixed and semi-fixed underground equipment
Installation Best Practices
Maintain minimum bending radius during installation
Avoid torsional stress during reeling
Use cable cleats designed for flexible MV cables
Regularly inspect sheath condition in high-traffic areas
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AS/NZS 1802 Type 241SF fire-retardant?
Yes. The cable is fire retardant, meeting AS/NZS flame performance requirements for underground mining.
Can Type 241SF be used as a pump feeder cable?
